Le français comme « langue publique commune » au Québec

Non plus considéré comme appartenant seulement au groupe majoritaire canadien-français, le français est aujourd’hui promu par les autorités et par certains intellectuels québécois comme la « langue publique commune » pour tous ceux qui résident au Québec, quelle que soit leur origine ethnique. Mais peut-on vraiment « désethniciser » entièrement une langue? Et comment motiver les néo-Québécois à adopter pour leurs communications publiques une langue qui a été traditionnellement associée à l’ethnicité des Canadiens français? Telles sont les questions qui font l’objet de cet article, après un bref rappel de l’histoire du concept de « langue publique commune » tel qu’il est employé au Québec.Few political commentators in Quebec have done work on political no longer considered to belong exclusively to the French-Canadian majority, French is today promoted by the authorities and certain Quebec intellectuals as the «common public language» for all those who reside in Quebec, whatever their ethnic origin. But it is really possible to entirely «de-ethnicise» a language? And how can the neo-Quebecers be motivated to adopt for their public communications a language that is traditionally associated with the ethnicity of French-Canadians? These questions will be the subject of this article, along with a brief review of the history of the concept of a «common public language» as it is used in Quebec
